WHAT IS SUNDOWNING?
Sundowning is a state of confusion that appears in the late afternoon and into the night, often seen in people with dementia. Symptoms include agitation, restlessness, paranoia, and disorientation, thought to arise from changes in the body's internal clock and fading sensory cues.
In Somnia, Sundowning is more than a fading mindโ it is the surge of Sleep's influence. Vessels feel this when the threads that bind them to Sleep are tugged, subtly and invisibly, where her power is now the strongest: Nighttime. As dusk creeps in, Sleep's power rises, agitating Vessels and coaxing them toward a dream state where they can be more easily swayed. Shadows stretch unnaturally, memories blur, and even knowledge can falter.
Tethering is the only way to survive Sundowning. Vessels must actively Tether to one another during Sundowning to anchor themselves. Passive bonds or remembered connections are not enough; the mind requires the constant reinforcement of direct tethering. Untethered vessels are particularly vulnerable, and the pull grows stronger with each passing hour, nudging them closer to succumbence.
The effect primarily targets the vessel's mind, increasing confusion, paranoia, and instability. Secondary effects can extend outward: Tokens may falter or lose potency, while Offerings can behave unpredictably, becoming harder to control or more aggressive.
The longer a vessel remains untethered during Sundowning, the stronger the pullโ sometimes leaving lasting traces on both vessel and their associated tethers.
SUNDOWNING SYMPTOMS:
โข Restlessness and pacing.
โข Irritability, sudden mood swings, aggression and paranoia
โข Disorientation of time, place, and self
โข Hallucinations of shadows, whispers, or false figures that may resemble Sleep.
โข Memory lapses, including forgetting tethered bonds
โข Tokens may falter: spells misfire, enchantments weaken, and magical focus wavers.
โข Offerings may regress to base instincts, becoming aggressive or violent, sometimes displaying a sudden need for blood or other predatory behaviors.
Sundowning effects will be relevant throughout the Sundowning Arc.
