This post is your space to pitch player-run plots that may have wider-scale effects— plots that other characters can join, that shape the environment, lore, or dynamics of the world. If your idea involves other characters, creates setting-wide consequences, or introduces new concepts you'd like mod input or approval on— this is the place for it. Please include in your pitch your general idea, who is/could be involved in the plot and the timeframe it should likely take place during.
You're also welcome to use this post to workshop ideas with other players, interest check before kicking off, collaborate, etc!
General Idea: For months, Lortel has been talking about creating a communal greenhouse to enable Manhattan to finally better grow their own fresh food, one of their most consistent and critical needs. This obviously requires a ton of investment, effort, and time, between locating materials, construction, and actually sourcing and cultivating edible plants, fruits, and vegetables!
Well, she's finally getting this underway properly! She's secured a partner in the venture and started making real preparations to make this happen.
It is very much intended to be a community-wide effort for and by the residents of Manhattan broadly.
Who is/could be involved: Literally basically anyone. Lortel has made an IC network post about the effort, and received offers of materials, effort, seeds and cuttings, gardening/farming knowledge, the works. She's explicitly relying on those folks who received plants from Sleep as gifts some time ago, as well, and anyone who received one could get involved. Even supply runners who just help move things would be of great use to the causeβeveryone can offer something, as long as they want to help! Right now, her primary partner on the project is Dr. Veritas Ratio, who is assisting with the construction and materials sourcing and development. They've teamed up to combine their knowledge and efforts as well as recruit others to the cause.
I imagine a great deal of this will be handwaved for folks' convenience, but I do expect actual threads to come out of it as well! People can be involved as much or as little as they want based on that.
Timeframe: Shad (Ratio's player) and I discussed, and we think realistically at least 4 months would make the most sense for them to 1) source enough materials, 2) construct/modify the actual hothouses (yes plural, details below), 3) set up the actual growing pots and plots, and 4) begin to cultivate/see the literal fruits of their efforts. Landing the project's launch somewhere around September or so!
Right now, we have a loose outline of posts planned to sort of benchmark progress: another post end of this/start of next month basically taking a more explicit inventory of the available plants and seeds, a post in late summer addressing progress, expected launch window, and any last minute needs, and a post around mid-September formally announcing that the greenhouse(s) are open and ready for use.
Notes: Real world locations have been chosen for this project! There is a Home Depot on 23rd Street (close-ish to the Crosby hotel, where the HSR cast will likely help store and organize supplies) that Ratio is using to source a lot of his materials, and another up on 61st they'll eventually source as well. The greenhouse is actually a collection of five mini-hothouses on a rooftopβit's the site of a former cannabis dispensary (called Green Klub, right on FDR Drive beside the East River) wayyyyy down in east FiDi that grows its own plants, hence the hothouses! They'll be using the existing frames of those five structures to fit with new plastic/glass panels and insulation to turn into proper hothouses again. (They're all mini, but put all together they provide about as much space as a standard greenhouse would, and should be plenty for the characters' purposes.)
Also, importantly, she's directly sought out Sleep's help with the project, though she doesn't yet know what that help will entail for the greenhouse specifically. (If you have thoughts on what that looks like or how it plays out please do feel free to let me know!!) But she will make good on the deal Sleep offered her, largely in hopes of help with finding or developing arable soil.
Lastly, this will likely end up providing fresh, untainted food in direct contrast to Vander's tainted supplies, though this will be totally unintentional on Lortel and Ratio's partsβuntil/if Lortel ever finds out what Vander is up to. If she does, I'll come back here to update, bc it would change how she utilizes and talks about this whole thing! And we could do some further plotting for what those cross purposes with supplies would mean for everybody.
Hello there! This does look awesome, but I'm going to give you guys the ok to successfully do this earlier than planned— Anywhere between June and July, post-June's dreamscape event would work even better. We can explain that it came from Sleep's help together with Vander's own offering which will tie in perfectly with plot in giving her more power in the future.
The reason I'd like to allow you this earlier is that September is going to be the start of the new arc, and this may throw all your hard work in the shoot without being able to play with the results as soon as you've built up to it, since, the setting will be going through changes that will make that fairly difficult to, shall we say, reap what you've sown immediately.
If this possibility is okay for you, you are free to begin putting this in motion!
Talked with Shadβwe're both completely cool with this! We're planning to just adjust our posting timeline slightly to a post the end of this month and then one mid-July. If that works then we're all set!!
(can't wait for the greenhouse to blow up 1.5 months after they got it ready, love this for them)
